I don't think we had a chickenpox vaccine when I was a kid because I got chickenpox. I am wondering if a chickenpox vaccine would really prevent shingles, though. I know a little bit about vaccines, but I'm no expert. I do know about chickenpox, though. After you get chickenpox (varicella zoster), the illness is stored in dormant form as herpes zoster (shingles). Information I have read about shingles says that only people who have had chickenpox can get shingles, so does that mean that people who have been vaccinated can NOT get shingles? I am only 26 and had shingles 3 times in 2 years, most likely brought on by periods of acute stress. In the reading I have done, I have read that it is rare for people to get it more than once and extremely rare for people to have it more than 3 times, so I might be in the clear. I hope that since my son has been vaccinated for varicella that he won't get shingles when he is older.
